A few months back, I was listening to a podcast and the guest was talking about their father and how he had kept a journal when she was growing up. She was given the journal when he passed, and even though they hadn’t always had the best relationship, she realized how much he had loved and cared for her. Now, it’s a bit morbid, but I thought that the idea of keeping a journal for my baby sounded like such a great idea.

Similar to a baby book, but without being as bulky or cumbersome as some of them are, I’ve started writing to baby about certain milestones, things I am excited about, letting baby know how loved they are even before we’ve met them.
Our plan is to give our baby the journal when they turn 16 or 18, so they always know how much they are loved. Right now, because baby hasn’t been born yet, a lot of the milestones are just things like ultrasounds and big events like baby showers or reaching certain months in this pregnancy. Once baby arrives, I’ll be able to document other milestones, like their first bath, or first words, once they’ve started crawling or walking, that kind of thing.

It’s a simple yet sweet tradition or practice to start and inexpensive as well! All you need is a notebook and a pen. I will probably also start including pictures and other little keepsakes as baby grows up, but I love the idea of having something special for them to see how they’ve grown in our eyes.
