Make Space to Make Things

At the beginning of this year, My partner and I bought a house and moved, starting fresh after what was a bit of a challenging 2024.  We love this little space, but there are always things to work on, update and change.

One of the features we loved the most was this little nook, right at the front of the house.  At the time, I was working from home 2 days a week, and it was the perfect space for a tiny home office for those Work-From-Home days.  However, shortly into the new year, I got a new job that required me to be in the office 5 days a week.  I didn’t really mind, but it left the space kind of in limbo since we didn’t really have a need for a home office anymore.

I’m a crafty person.  I love to make things and am particularly fond of knitting and crochet (hence the title of the blog), but crafting can get messy, with yarn scraps, paper, felt, glitter, whatever, getting left behind after finishing a project.  So, I decided that I needed a dedicated space to put my projects, work from when needed, and just be a little space for me to pursue my passions.

I wanted the space to be functional as well as aesthetic, so storage was going to be the number one priority. I already had this desk from IKEA and went through all of the drawers and purged what I didn’t need, organized my vinyl and got rid of the little scraps I knew I wouldn’t use moving forward. Then I found space for some of my other materials: felts, embroidery threads and materials, polymer clay and tools, paper, etc.

I wanted the top of my desk to be as clear as so I would have a fresh workspace to use. My computer does take up quite a bit of space, so we bought some of these floating shelves from IKEA to get things off the desk and maximize the space.

The biggest challenge was my massive yarn haul. We got these shelves and baskets from, you guessed it, IKEA, and I was able to fill them with all of my yarns and scraps. One of these days I will organize them a little bit better, but for now, just having them all in one place is a huge improvement.

I hung up some pictures, and honestly, I am pretty pleased with how everything turned out! It’s a small space, but it serves it’s purpose and things can always change depending on what new project I want to start or rather what new craft peaks my fancy… I already have a hankering to give quilting or machine embroidery a go, so stay tuned for that should it ever manifest itself!
