Falling For Summer: A Survival Guide for Summer as a Fall Lover

I try to love the summer, I really do. Longer days, warm evenings, patios, swimming, music festivals, all of that, but my heart truly lives for the fall. I have always been a sweatshirt and jeans over shorts and tank tops kind of girl. I prefer the smell of rain on fallen leaves and warm spices over florals and sunscreen. I love dark, muted colours over vibrant neons and bright tones. Something about the fall just feels magical to me really, and if you are reading this, then maybe you feel the same way.
Sunburns and Seasonal Misery
Although, for me at least, this summer started a little later than usual, we’ve been dealing with heatwave after heatwave, and it’s starting to get to me. I’m also in my third trimester, and the heat certainly isn’t helping with the whole staying comfortable while pregnant thing. Air-conditioning has been a life saver to say the least.
Summer just really hasn’t been my season ever. Let’s start with the obvious. The heat. Where I live, our summers are hot and humid. On top of that, we’ve fallen victim to incoming smoke from distant forest fires that have affected the air quality and makes it challenging to really enjoy the outdoors. I know that most of this is due to climate change, but it makes me sad to think that we’ve messed up our planet so badly that just being outside for a few months in the summer is miserable.

Let’s not forget about summer fashion. I’m a curvy girl of a certain age, and summer fashion is always a struggle. Part of it is body image, and the other is modesty. My day job involves working with students, and honestly, no one wants or needs to see me in booty shorts and a crop top, but it feels like those are the only options that you can find in stores these days. Don’t get me wrong, I love a cute summer dress, and this year especially, I’ve been living in them, but my wardrobe feels limited, and I never feel worse about my body than in the summer time.
The Magic of a Moody Season
The fall just brings a sense of coziness. The crisp fall air, cozy sweaters, inviting scents… It’s just so much more comfortable. It’s the perfect time of year to curl up on the couch with a hot cup of tea or coffee and a good book, or take a stroll outside, taking in the colours of the season without worrying if you’re going to sweat through your t-shirt.

Summer always feels so fast paced, feeling like you have to make the most of your time off work, entertaining the kids, whereas fall gives you permission to take a breath and slow down.
Adding Fall to Summer
Even though we are still in the throws of summer, and only really half-way through July, I thought it might be fun to do a little series on how to bring fall into your life while you sweat through the summer. Over the next few weeks, I’ll talk about incorporating fall decor, food, fashion, crafts and DIY projects into your home as we (im)patiently await the fall season.
So stay tuned for some, what I think will be, fun content! In the meantime, tell me, what do you do to beat the heat while you anxiously await cooler weather? What are your favourite ways to add a touch of fall to your summer?
